Midsumma Major Event: Queer Melbourne's most colourful and exciting outdoor celebration
Hold on World, queer Melbourne’s single largest event, Carnival, is once again opening the Midsumma Festival. Carnival is the opening event, and for many people the favourite, of the Midsumma Festival. This is our day - the day when Queer Melbourne in all its glorious diversity comes out to meet each other and just have a fun, relaxing time. Set on the banks of the Yarra, Birrarung Marr (beside Federation Square) plays home to this exuberating day of celebration in 2011, and it's all made possible thanks to the support of our principal partner, the City of Melbourne. Carnival is the showcase of all the queer culture that's to come over the following 3 weeks of Midsumma!
We're delighted to advise that Carnival will once again be a BYO event. We do appreciate your supporting our three bars though, the sales of which go to support Midsumma and help keep your favourite event thriving. Midsumma welcomes the Mercedes-Benz Melbourne Sircuit and Glasshouse bars to Carnival - on hand to quench your thirst, as well as a variety of food vendors who will satisfy (almost) every hunger. If you're still salivating, our entertainment line-up has something for everyone and will no doubt fill the void.
The Festival Showcase on two stages will provide a sneak peak at some of the amazing events coming up during Midsumma. Get a taste of some of the outstanding performing arts events including live bands, cabaret and all things theatrical! The line-up will include performances from Circus Oz, the cast from Xanadu, Em Rusciano (The 7PM Project), Hayley Teal (X Factor), The Kill Room (featuring Monique Schafter – ABC’s Hungry Beast), Dolly Diamond and Luke Gallagher, The Oily Girls (Scottish girl band) and much, much more. Olympic Gold Medallist, Matthew Mitcham, will also be making an appearance for Telstra and Funky Trunks. Tracy Bartram, Alan Brough, Noni Hazelhurst and Annie Phelan & Colleen Hewett (Prisoner) will appear for a number of charities.
Eagle Pack presents Dulcie's Dog Show, in this high camp Midsumma institution hosted by Dulcie Du Jour. The 2011 categories include "cutest bitch" and "best owner and dog combo". Judges will include Lady Mayoress Emma Page Campbell, Ruby Rose (MTV) and Dr Hugh Wirth. This is sure to be a whole lot of fun. Online registrations have now closed, but you can register at the Eagle Pack Stand on the day.
JOY 94.9 will be broadcasting the excitement of the Midsumma Carnival stages live to air, so don't forget you can listen online at www.joy.org.au. There's no excuse for missing even a minute of the action. Keep your eye out for MCV, which will have all the latest information about Carnival, including maps, stage line-ups and stallholder listings.
