Positive power in action by the girls of the Victorian Roller Derby League.

Gasworks Arts Park and the Victorian Roller Derby League have joined forces to support this fantastic exhibition of action images, super women and the fans that love them. Talented photographer, Zina Sofer, has been taking shots at league games for the past 12 months with full media access. This has given Zina incredible angles to place herself and the camera; and capture the power, passion and pride of this awesome sport.

As Evada Peron says in Derby Life.... Imagine the most exciting sport on earth and then the most fabulously strong, confident, and amazing-looking human beings playing it. Combine this with the fact that not only are they just ten feet in front of your face, they actually look at you, smile at you and if you're lucky give a lil' wink. Continue with me on this fantasy and imagine that not only do you have the pleasure of cheering for them, but you also have the gratification of knowing they can actually hear you! They actually see you! And later on at the after-party they raise their glass to you and thank YOU for being so awesome!

Sigh... This is how derby crushes are made. It's the perfect storm, really. Derby is like a candy bar at an ice cream shop. You have every kind of sprinkle, chocolate nugget and sweet syrup to choose from and with a side of kick-ass and wrist-guard sweat.

  • Star Observer, 6 Dec - From circuit to canvas: Roller Derby Saved My Soul: "The Star Observer spoke to Sofer during her preparations for the exhibition, sizing up canvases and perhaps the hardest task, whittling down her favourite 20 images."
