Midsumma Festival Hub event

a page turner - quite literally.

This series of festival readings runs over three Wednesday nights. On offer are the thoughts of our most inspirational wordsmiths, each and every one with a compelling story to tell. Participating writers include Jean Taylor reading from her acclaimed book "Brazen Hussies", Tom Cho reading an excerpt from his second book titled "The Meaning of Life and Other Fictions" and playwright Kevin McGreal, who will stage a rehearsed reading from his new play titled "Jesus and the Goldtooth gang". There will also be a few queer literary surprises along the way, all packaged for a cosy midweek evening, custom-made for Kaye Sera's petite showroom.

Wednesday 19 January, 7.30pm: Brazen Hussies, by Jean Taylor
A Herstory of Radical Activism in the Women's Liberation Movement in Victoria 1970 - 1979
.
From the moment Jean Taylor, mother of two primary school age children, stepped in the Brunswick Conscious-Raising Group meeting in November 1972 she became a part of the world-wide Women's Liberation Movement. It wasn't long before she was attending meetings and doing roster at the Women's Liberation Centre and Women's Liberation Halfway House. Jean came out as a lesbian in 1979, during her time as a paid worker at Matilda Women's Refuge and from then on identified as a radical lesbian feminist activist. Jean has not only been actively engaged in many lesbian and feminist activist collectives over these past three-plus decades but has also established herself as a writer and has documented many of the events and changes she and other womyn have witnessed over the past 40 years.

Wednesday 26 January, 7.30pm: Look Who's Morphing, by Tom Cho
Tom Cho is at that point in his career where he can perform greatest hits and new work. Thus, he will perform a favourite from his fiction collection Look Who's Morphing and read an excerpt from his second book in progress. This second book, The Meaning of Life and Other Fictions, considers some of life's weightier questions. For this reading, Tom will answer the question "What are the attributes of God?"

Wednesday 2 February, 7.30pm: Jesus and the Goldtooth gang, by Kevin McGreal
(Shakespeare's Boys, Thy will be done and 25 Frames)
A new dazzling comedy about Religion and Friendship. Kevin has given his atheist partner a huge Catholic funeral and has now turned it into a big Westend musical, making a huge amount of money. Richard hates it and is completely unsettled by it all. Darling is ambivalent as she tries to placate both sides. What happens when one friend does something completely unexpected and different but still wants validation from his friends?
