25 Jan 2012: review of Matilda´s Project by Sally Wilmott

In a world where the 'normal' family unit is told to children by what they watch on TV or read in fairytales; it is hard for them to understand that someone else's family may look a little different.

Teacher and thespian Danny Gibbins, noticed this in her classroom, which became the inspiration for her play. 'This community production is being staged to get the message out to as many children as possible that family diversity is not a negative thing'.

Matilda's Project is the story of a girl anxious about the upcoming day at school, as she's afraid that her family project is unlike the others in the class.

After a quick word with her Mums, Matilda happily bounces off, displaying her drawing and book of choice 'The Rainbow Cubby House', with pride.

Simon and Sashka, two other children in the class, also live in families contrary to what Matilda expects. Simon moves between his Mum and Dad's and Sashka lives with her Nan and Pop.

Just as Matilda learns about family diversity, the children in the audience watch the play unfold excitedly.

The school teacher, Mr Sharif, involves them in the action too; asking questions about their own family, reading books like 'Bush Tucka Good Tucka' and 'Two Birthday Cakes' and arranging a game of musical chairs.

Danny Gibbins, who plays Matilda, Simon and Sashka, is utterly loveable and easy for the young audience to identify with. The soundtrack is a lot of fun too.

The performance refreshes, educates and entertains mums and kids alike, teaching them that 'all their experiences of family are valid.'
