A coming-of-age opera about a transgender woman
As One is a chamber opera composed by Laura Kaminsky with a libretto by Mark Campbell and Kimberly Reed. The most-performed modern opera in America, and debuting at #3 on the classical Billboard charts, As One is an unforgettable and intimate coming-of-age story about a transgender woman.
In this chamber opera, two voices—Hannah after (mezzo-soprano) and Hannah before (baritone)—share the part of a sole transgender protagonist. Fifteen songs comprise the three-part narrative; with empathy and humour, they trace Hannah’s experiences from her youth in a small town to her college years—and finally traveling alone to a different country, where she realises some truths about herself. Gertrude Opera's Australian Premiere features on-stage string quartet, and film footage by the creator, Kimberly Reed.
Led by award-winning director Linda Thompson, with music direction by Conductor, Alexandra Eryart (USA).
"Accessible, evocative and profoundly relevant, As One breathes new life into opera."
"No one grows up easily. ... We all have issues with family. The point of 'As One' is that we all are one."
