Grab your besties for a twilight film screening celebrating the magical bonds of friendship and chosen family
Midsumma Festival, Melbourne Queer Film Festival and Immigration Museum join forces to present Galentine’s Under the Stars, an outdoor cinema event celebrating the magical bonds of friendship and chosen family.
Galentine’s Day – or Palentine’s Day is all about surrounding yourself with your BFFs and revelling in the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Join us on the closing eve of Midsumma Festival for a twilight film screening of shorts and feature films championing queer stories of platonic love, friendship and belonging.
Tangerine (2015) directed by Sean Baker: Sean Baker’s breakout hit Tangerine is a wildly entertaining revenge comedy centring around female friendship and sisterhood. Famously shot on an iPhone the films follows the day in the life of transgender sex-worker Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez). Upon hearing that her pimp boyfriend hasn't been faithful during the 28 days she was locked up, the working girl and her best friend, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), embark on a mission to get to the bottom of the scandalous rumour. Their rip-roaring odyssey leads them through various subcultures of Los Angeles on their quest for vengeance.
We’re Doing Fine (2021) directed by Andrew Mills: Winner of Melbourne Queer Film Festival’s Audience Choice Award for Best Short last year, We’re Doing Fine is a hilarious snapshot of friendship and frenemies, filmed locally in Collingwood.
Chosen Family (2015) directed by Neha Gautman: Filmed in New York, Chosen Family highlights the story of 5 women identified people of colour who create an intentional safe space in an attempt to foster community and build their 'Chosen Family'.
