Low Brows and High Hopes

2019, group collage by Queer in Kingston with Yandell Walton and Willow Franklin

An online exhibition and zine by Queer in Kingston and Connect

Artist Willow Franklin, and poet Zoe Kingsley, in collaboration with Queer in Kingston and Connect present an online zine and outdoor projection for Midsumma Festival.

Willow and Zoe have collaborated with the young people of Queer in Kingston and Connect, two social support service groups for LGBTQIA+ young people living in Kingston to produce this new visual art and creative writing project. Over a series of workshops, the artists and young people have come together to explore the idea of ‘lowbrow art’, inspired by key social and pop-culture movements in visual arts and literature.

An online zine will be available to download through the Kingston Arts website, in addition to an outdoor projection screening daily on The Bridge Projection Space, 985 Nepean Hwy. Moorabbin between 21 April – 29 May.

Willow Franklin (they/her) is an emerging digital artist who creates through the lens of their queer identity. Their work is about gender presentation and the expectations that come with this identity. They work primarily with digital manipulation and collage using archival media. IG: @pocket.trash.billie

Zoe Kingsley (she/her) is a poet living and working in Narrm/Melbourne. She is Deputy Editor at The Suburban Review and part of the We Eat Out Together collective.

Queer in Kingston (QiK) is an inclusive, confidential, social support group for young people aged 14-25 years, who identify as same sex attracted, gender diverse, queer or questioning. The group of young people that attend QiK are supported to feel confident in the exploration of who they are, whilst being provided with a safe and fun atmosphere.

Connect supports LGBTIQA+ young people aged 18-25 years to network with other members of the Rainbow Community, over coffee and cake at local cafes within the City of Kingston.
