12 writers, 6 minutes each
The 2020 Rapid Fire line-up is almost complete. This year we present Rapid Fire veterans and Hare Hole favourites Kath Duncan, Tumi the Be, Gemma Mahadeo and Roshelle Fong, alongside those new to the event, including Timmah Ball, Anna Liebzeit, Charlotte Sareño and Racerage Rhymes.
With around 45 past incarnations since 1994, Rapid Fire is both the longest-running spoken word event at Hare Hole and its most popular. Join us as 12 writers have just 6 minutes to present a piece of writing they have crafted for this event. Rapid Fire is a night of nuanced storytelling in multiple forms of writing and spoken word performance. The 12 writers/performers call on their powers of imagination, divergent life experience and skill with language to share lived experience, describe imaginary states of being or to conjure new worlds of possibility in a fast-paced and open-hearted celebration of the beauty of language, storytelling and the spoken word.
Rapid Fire's recipe for success is simple: give 12 writers 6 minutes each, draw the order from a hat and ensure that nobody goes over time. This formula provides writers a platform to refine, condense and edit a story to the time constraints. The power and economy of the resulting story is a win for writers and audiences alike
This year Rapid fire includes some of the spoken word artists programmed for Iridescent, the inaugural Queer People of Colour and First Nations arts and culture festival programmed by Mama Alto and held at Hare Hole in November last year. With the last-minute cancellation of the festival’s spoken word event, we welcome several to Rapid Fire, all for the first time.
With a majority of new writers taking part in every Rapid Fire, the event has seen hundreds of writers take part in its 27-year history. It has been an early proving ground for now well-known local writers, some reading early excerpts of now published works, and remains a great place for established writers to present new work. More importantly it welcomes writers of all experience levels, and for many reading at Rapid Fire was their first time on a stage.
