Photo of Australian Print Workshop premises

Australian Print Workshop

210 Gertrude St, Fitzroy

For Melbourne Pride, Australian Print Workshop has commissioned local artist Richard Harding to create a site-specific installation in APW’s windows. First exhibited in 1997, Harding’s series of woodcuts use base colours from the rainbow flag to inspire figurative variations. Each colour offers an allegorical backdrop to represent an aspect of gay life from the mid-1990s. Influenced by expressionist modes of making these subjective male depictions operate as snapshots of narratives from lived experiences.

Opening Hours 13 Feb: commissioned site-specific installation by Richard Harding in APW’s windows viewable at all hours; APW Gallery open 11am – 5pm.

Richard Harding is a print-based artist and Senior Lecturer at the School of Art, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. With an art practice extending over 35 years, Harding’s oeuvre explores the use of printmaking’s intrinsic qualities of sameness and difference through the multiple with the merging of traditional and contemporary print methods. Harding’s visual research is informed by architectural and queer theory utilising print media, analogue and digital, as vehicles for an ongoing art practice.

Australian Print Workshop is a unique centre providing both established and emerging artists with access to a wide range of printmaking equipment and expertise in the context of a world-class printmaking workshop. APW fosters the development of printmaking as a vibrant and progressive art form. Through its annual program, the Workshop represents the very best in contemporary printmaking.
