Asexual Fantasies and Hopeless Aromantics

An aspec cabaret

Sophie Harvey is a performer. She is also an asexual who is constantly figuring out if she is somewhere on the aromantic spectrum. Join her for an evening of exploration of her identity through music. After a successful run at The Butterfly Club, Sophie returns with Asexual Fantasies and Hopeless Aromantics, “not your typical cabaret” (thetheatre.au).

In realising and exploring her own sexuality, Sophie was confronted by the lack of representation there is for aspec people, especially in theatre, an artform she loves so much. So, she brings a cabaret that will be viewed through an aspec lens, featuring an eclectic mix of songs from Golden Age soprano to Queen, from indie to contemporary musical theatre. In between will be childhood memories, awkward high school relationships, and drama school-induced epiphanies.

Asexual Fantasies and Hopeless Aromantics is a heartfelt and vulnerable exploration of Sophie’s experiences with asexuality, aromanticism, and how that interacts with her life as a performer. But, although it is honest about the growing pains of navigating an aspec identity, ultimately, it is hopeful, joyful, and “topped off with dry, self-aware humour.” (thetheatre.au)

"With a voice that can just as easily melt you with soprano as it can rouse you with theatrical bravado, Harvey humbly commands the space"
— thetheatre.au
"When she sings, you feel it: the ache of not being represented and the hope in carving a space for it."
— thetheatre.au
