How to Keep Safe
Image: by Yvette Turnbull
McCarthyism nearly broke her; homophobia almost silenced her
The world can be a scary place when you're 10 years old and trying to avoid a communist invasion, eternity in hell and the A bomb exploding in your city, maybe even on your house. No wonder Cathy escaped to Australia, and forgot to tell her family she was lesbian.
In 1950s America there was lots of talk about The Enemy Within, the A bomb and Reds under the bed, but homosexuality was so taboo that nobody dared talk about it. It was as though it didn't exist. Now the Alt Right can't stop talking about it as they try to erase us completely.
Come and witness the story of someone who has lived through this all before: first as child in 1950s America and right now in Australia, as she navigates her family relationships as an adult.
Written and Performed by Catherine Samsury, Directed by Kari Van.
