The Placeholder

Sometimes we can only hold a place for people in our hearts

The Placeholder is a six-handed ensemble piece set in a regional Australian town over five years. It follows a group of women commemorating their late friend Barb, who died of breast cancer. The play centres around a trans man transitioning within the group, addressing themes of womanhood, feminism, and inclusion. It examines the dynamics of gender in tight-knit communities and the challenges faced by trans individuals in finding acceptance. The narrative encourages reflection on maintaining personal values amidst evolving identities and embracing diversity.

This new Australian play was written by trans playwright and actor, Ben MacEllen (He/him). Ben was part of the 2022/23 Midsumma Pathways Program for emerging queer artists with disability, mentored by award-winning playwright and actor, Kate Mulvany. Kate has continued in her role as mentor for The Placeholder.

This development will result in a showing at the end of the week for an invited audience.

Queer Imaginings has been assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body.
