Jeremy Hawkes - matter

Proud Crip queer artist Jeremy Hawkes exhibits his first solo show
‘matter’ is Jeremy Hawkes’ first solo exhibition in Melbourne in over a decade and his first at the North Preston Lifesaving Club. This show comprises works from across his creative practice and uses painting, drawing and sculpture to explore ideas that matter... with matter. Using the body as a site of identity, these works explore how we exist in the world as corporeal beings, lumps of flesh and how we negotiate the shifting landscapes of contemporary culture in the face of mass extinction, global pandemics and the need to connect.
Jeremy Hawkes is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, teacher and occasional performer with over 30 years’ experience exhibiting extensively in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. He has a BA in Fine Art from SCU and post-graduate qualifications from RMIT and VCA. He is a passionate advocate and activist for people living with disability, particularly those in creative fields. Jeremy is a dedicated teacher and has facilitated many community arts projects including for ADAHK, Hong Kong. His work is represented in many private and public collections and he is the recipient of a number of awards and prizes, most recently the Create NSW Fellowship and the Australia Council for the Arts, Art and Disability Mentoring Initiative. In 2019 he attended residencies in both New York and Berlin, with a resulting exhibition at the Berlin Institute of Art. He is currently a Board member of the national peak arts and disability organisation, Arts Access Australia and is a founding member of NPLC Victoria’s first disability-led studios / gallery. His work explores corporeality, the human condition and the body as a site of both identity and pathology.
