MQFF Presents: Midsumma Movies - Bottoms
Director Emma Seligman has chased down her 2020 debut, Shiva Baby with probably the most uproarious, subversive, satirical high-school black comedy since Heathers. Unpopular senior-year lesbian besties PJ (Rachel Sennott, also the film’s co-writer with Seligman) and Josie (Ayo Edebiri) hit upon a brilliant scheme to lose their virginity to the unattainable cheerleaders they’re crushing on – they’ll set up a fight club for aggrieved girls to let rip with their pent-up frustrations with men. What could possibly go wrong?
With a score by Charli XCX and Leo Birenberg dripping in ‘80s synth stylings, and with supporting turns from former NFL star Marshawn Lynch, Ruby Cruz, Kaia Gerber and Red, White and Royal Blue’s Nicholas Galitzine, the increasingly unhinged Bottoms doesn’t simply queer the John Hughes comedies of yesteryear; it mercilessly tears them – and itself! – another one...

"A HIGH-SCHOOL COMEDY THAT IS BRAZENLY GONZO, SCALDINGLY AND AT TIMES EVEN DEMENTEDLY OVER-THE-TOP, AND ACTUALLY ABOUT SOMETHING"
