Queer PHOTO - Launch: Wyndham Art Gallery
Image: by Sunil Gupta
Come and view photographic work from a range of local and international LGBTQIA+ artists including Sunil Gupta's work 'The New Pre-Raphaelites', all the way from London.
‘The New Pre-Raphaelites’ is a series of 10 works portraying individuals and families affected by Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalised homosexuality. This law, instituted by the British in 1861 and overturned until 2018, led to the arbitrary arrest and exploitation of LGBTQIA+ Indians.
Alongside Sunil Gupta’s work, there’s a stella line-up of exhibitions:
- International artist Asafe Ghalib’s artworks, ‘Queer Immigrants’ is an act of both confrontation and pride.
- Peter Waples-Crowe, a First Nations artist, provides a commentary in the ‘Affirm’ exhibition on the multiple identities of being both queer and Indigenous.
- Wiradjuri artist, Karla Dickens’ self-portraits ‘To See or Not To See’ evoke the history of oppression and recent Aboriginal experiences.
