Photo Essay or Book Project

In 2022/23 Midsumma undertook a photography-based project, celebrating the history of some of Melbourne’s most iconic queer performance venues and events that have helped shape Victoria’s queer performing arts scene over the past few decades, but through photography of what such venues and events are doing today.
A selection of these photos with accompanying articles will be released in due course, but the initial project has been so successful that it has been expanded to a larger longer-term project capturing the queer arts scene here in Melbourne (and a bit beyond) through photo essays. The project will span the 2023-24 period, with the view of a photo book being produced. Photos will focus on audience interactions, and behind the scenes shots of artists pre and post-performance, with some on-stage shots also included.
Do you have a queer performance you would like considered? If so we would love to hear from you. Please email [email protected] and let us know a little bit about your event, when and where it will take place and confirming that you would be willing to allow us to photograph the event, gain back stage access for contextual photographs for the photo essays, and that you would approve any photos taken to be published by Midsumma (with appropriate credits for your event/venue of course).
